Livestock Evaluator

Livestock Evaluator

The Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program provides financial assistance to producers whose livestock, poultry or honeybees have been damaged by wildlife. This program is supported by Growing Forward 2, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada.
Livestock claims for within the Township of Huron-Kinloss are processed through the Township of Huron-Kinloss municipal office.
The procedure now, after the changes effective January 1st, 2017 is:

  • Within 48 hours of discovering the death or injury of the livestock, the owner must notify the municipality (do not move the predated animal from the initial site where found as the evaluator will need to photograh the site in tact to support the claim)
  • Within 3 days after receiving notification, the valuer will conduct a full investigation
  • Within 10 days after receiving notification, the valuer will prepare the report and submit it to the municipality
  • The municipality will submit the complete application to OMAFRA within 7 business days of the on-site investigation
  • OMAFRA will review the application and decide on compensation amount.  Owner to be informed of decision within 30 days of submitting a complete application
  • The livestock owner has 20 business days to appeal OMAFRA's decision
  • If there are no appeals, OMAFRA will notify the municipality who can then issue payment to the livestock owner.

NOTE:  Compensation values will be higher for registered purebred cattle, sheep and goats.  Documentation will be required. Pregnant cattle, sheep and goats will be compensated at a higher value as well. Owners will need to provide breeding records for the predated animal. Claims need to have a Premises ID number and a valid Farm Business Registration number, or one of the allowable exemptions for that claim to be eligible.  The link on the right hand side of this page will take you to the OMAFRA site that explains the program in detail.
