Cottage, RV, Trailer and Boat Fire Safety

Fire doesn’t take a vacation!

  • Test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your cottages
  • Pack new smoke & carbon monoxide alarms, and fresh batteries, before you head to the cottage. Have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas. It’s the law!
  • If your cottage has any fuel-burning appliances, attached garage or wood or gas fireplace by law you must install CO alarms outside all sleeping areas.
  • Alarms don’t last forever! Replace all smoke alarms over 10 years old and any CO alarms made before 2009.
  • Make sure your boat, boathouse, camper or trailer also have smoke and CO alarms if required by law.
  • Put fresh batteries in all smoke and CO alarms at the start of cottage season.
  • Help protect your family and guests with the latest safety technology: “Worry-Free” smoke and CO alarms last 10 years and have sealed lithium batteries that never need replacing for the life of the alarm!
  • Place fire extinguishers on all storeys, in the kitchen, garage/boathouse and in the boat.
  • Ensure all family members & guests know how to escape if a fire starts at cottage
  • Create and practice a cottage fire escape plan with the whole family and include guests.
  • RVs, trailers & mobile homes burn too! Install smoke alarms. Plan how family members & guests will escape a fire
  • Alcohol is a factor in many fires resulting in death & serious injury. Drink responsibly this summer holiday season.
  • Have fire suppression tools available when burning outdoors (i.e. shovel, rake and a water source)

Comprehensive Zoning By-Law Review

The Township of Huron-Kinloss has begun the process of completing a comprehensive review of its Zoning By-law with the expertise of MHBC Planning.

The Zoning By-law is a legal document that specifies how land can be used through regulations (property setbacks, building heights etc.) and permissions (residential, commercial, agricultural, etc). The Township's current By-Law is 16 years old and requires an update as a result of the recent approval of the Township's new Official Plan in 2016.  The comprehensive review will also ensure the Zoning By-law reflects current practices, changes to provincial policy, and supports the strategic directions of the Township.

A draft of the proposed Zoning By-law will be available following the August 14th, 2017 Council Meeting on the Township website and at the municipal office. An Open House has been scheduled for Saturday September 9th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Ripley Huron Community Centre. We encourage residents to review the draft document and attend the Open House to provide input or seek information on their own particular property. Public comments are welcome throughout the process and can be submitted to Pierre Chauvin at pchauvin@mhbcplan.com or Sonya Watson, Clerk at swatson@huronkinloss.com or can be dropped off or mailed to the Municipal Office.

It is anticipated that the final draft of the Zoning By-law will be before Council by November/December 2017.
