Initial Borehole Drilling in the Township of Huron-Kinloss

Proposed Test Sites

• This initial borehole is for research purposes and is not expected to be a repository site.
• The Township of Huron-Kinloss has not agreed to host a repository and several more years of
increasingly detailed study would be required before addressing this question in a way that
involves community members. The research borehole will provide an opportunity for people to
be involved in the studies and for the NWMO and the community to work together to learn
more about the area’s potential to meet the robust technical requirements required to safely
host a repository for used nuclear fuel.

Tour of the OPG Western Waste Management Facility

A group of municipal staff and several citizens from the Township of Huron-Kinloss recently toured the Western Waste Management Facility operated by Ontario Power Generation at the Bruce nuclear site. The learning opportunity provided participants with firsthand information about the storage methods and best practices for the interim storage of used nuclear fuel. The tour was in keeping with the community’s expressed interest in learning more about Adaptive Phased Management (APM), Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

Contact Kelly Lush at the Municipal Office  at 519-395-3735 for more information about future opportunities to learn about APM.

NWMO Community Outreach

The NWMO would like to work with people in the community to plan for the drilling of an initial boerhole to advance understanding of general geology across the area. The initial borehole is for research purposes and is not expected to be a repository site.

If your community group or organization would like to learn more about Canada's plan for the long term storage of used nuclear fuel and about the initial borehole drilling please contact for further information.
