Council Highlights August 7th, 2024

The Township of Huron-Kinloss Committee of the Whole meeting was held in Council Chambers at 21 Queen Street in Ripley at 7:00 p.m. Highlights from the meeting include:

Point Clark Pickleball Club Delegation

The Point Clark Pickleball Club presented to Council, advocating for the creation of dedicated outdoor pickleball courts at the Point Clark Community Centre. Pickleball is rapidly growing in popularity in Huron-Kinloss. The club highlighted the sport's inclusivity, health benefits, and alignment with the Township's vision and mission. They expressed willingness to assist in planning and finding sponsors to help realize this project.

Maitland Valley Conservation Authority Watershed Strategy Summary

A delegation from the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) presented their watershed strategy to Council. The strategy, based on MVCA’s 2024-2026 work plan, outlines key initiatives for the next three years, including renewing the Program and Services agreement with member municipalities, engaging with First Nations and Métis communities, advocating for continued support of the Healthy Lake Huron initiative, and developing an asset management plan for essential equipment and infrastructure. The strategy will be reviewed and updated annually, with opportunities for public and municipal feedback. The full document is available on the MVCA website.

NWMO Site Selection Update and Regulatory Engagement Opportunities

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is in the final stages of selecting a site for a Deep Geological Repository (DGR) to safely contain Canada’s used nuclear fuel. The Township of Ignace recently confirmed its willingness to proceed, while the Municipality of South Bruce will hold a referendum on October 28, 2024. To engage the public and provide information, South Bruce has organized several events, including a Community Liaison Committee meeting on August 8th and a "Breakfast with the Regulators" on August 16th, featuring presentations from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. The next Township of Huron-Kinloss Council meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on August 12th, 2024. This meeting will be held in Council Chambers at the Municipal Office, 21 Queen Street in Ripley.
