Council Highlights December 16th, 2024

The Township of Huron-Kinloss Council meeting was held in Council Chambers at 21 Queen Street in Ripley at 7:00 p.m. Highlights from the meeting include:

Huron Shores ATV Club Delegation

The Huron Shores ATV Club (HSATV) provided an update to Council, showcasing their contributions, partnership benefits, and plans for the future.

The Club highlighted their role as valuable partners in Huron-Kinloss, with $15 million in trail liability insurance, ongoing trail maintenance, and volunteer efforts such as replacing signage, repairs, and inspections. They also emphasized the economic and tourism benefits of ATV use and its ability to encourage community volunteerism.

Since 2021, HSATV has invested heavily in capital projects and maintenance, contributing over 4,000 volunteer hours and generating significant savings for the Township.

Looking ahead, the Club outlined opportunities for trail expansion, including:

      • A 3km new trail in Kairshea County Forest, set to open in Spring 2025.
      • Multi-use trail development in Huron Tract County Forest as part of a five-year plan.
      • Potential new trails, such as the Ripley Apple Trail and other Township-owned properties.

HSATV extended their gratitude to Council, Township staff, and individuals like John Yungblut and Mike Fair for their continued support.

Water and Wastewater Operations

Council approved entering into a five-year agreement with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) for water and wastewater operation and maintenance services. The agreement begins on January 1, 2025, following the transition from the current provider, Veolia Canada, which concludes its service on December 31, 2024.

The Township extends its gratitude to Veolia Canada for over 20 years of dedicated service, providing safe and clean drinking water to the community. Their commitment to excellence has been integral to maintaining high standards in water and wastewater management.

The Ontario Clean Water Agency brings a comprehensive corporate and operating philosophy centered on ensuring the long-term viability of Huron-Kinloss facilities and equipment. OCWA emphasizes stewardship of natural and financial resources, compliance with environmental regulations, and the continual improvement of water and wastewater systems. Their extensive network of operational expertise will support the Township with strategic planning and energy management programs.

In addition to operational excellence, OCWA will enhance community involvement through participation in local events such as parades and shoreline cleanups. They also bring educational outreach initiatives, including the OneWater education program, the "I Don’t Flush" campaign, and the OCWA Water Buggy, fostering a deeper understanding of water conservation and environmental stewardship.

OCWA’s partnership reflects a forward-thinking approach to managing Huron-Kinloss’s water and wastewater systems, ensuring a seamless transition and continued excellence in service.
