Additional Information
Public Health & Safety: This work is conducted under the Public Health and Public Works exception to Ontario’s Cosmetic Pesticides Ban. Herbicides are utilized to manage specific noxious and invasive weeds that pose a direct risk to public safety, rather than for aesthetic purposes:
- Giant Hogweed: The sap contains phototoxic chemicals that cause severe blisters and skin scarring when exposed to sunlight.
- Invasive Phragmites: Reaching up to 5 metres (15 feet) in height, these plants can obstruct traffic signs and intersection sightlines. They also create a significant fire hazard when they dry out in late summer.
- Poison Ivy: Managed in high-traffic areas to reduce the risk of allergic reactions for trail and shoreline users.
Targeted Application: Licensed applicators use a direct-spray method applied only to the identified plants. No broad-area or blanket spraying is conducted. In accordance with provincial law, Yellow Warning Signs will be posted at treatment sites. These signs include the date of application; residents and pets should avoid these specific spots until the application has dried
Environmental Protections: To protect the shoreline and Lake Huron, the Township adheres to strict "no-spray" buffer zones near open water. Work is weather-dependent and is suspended if wind conditions create a risk of spray drift. This targeted approach helps protect native vegetation and pollinator habitats, while the product’s technology ensures it is rain-fast within 30 minutes.
Regulatory Standards: All products used are registered with Health Canada and applied in accordance with federal and provincial regulations. For technical details, you may view the official Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or the Product Label (Reg #27487).
